We work to break cycles of incarceration and hospitalization for people in behavioral health crisis.

Clear Pathways helps alleviate overburdened jails and hospitals and ensures adults in behavioral health crises have a clear path to getting help.

What we do: We develop long-term, sustainable solutions for adults in mental health and substance use disorder crises, thanks to our growing number of private, public and philanthropic partnerships. Three key crisis response elements we focus on:

Someone to call for help

Someone to come to the scene

A safe place to be

Why We Do This Work: We want to improve outcomes for people in crisis, alleviate overburdened criminal justice and hospital systems and create change within these systems.

Through Clear Pathways, our goal is to help better serve the public and create more efficient crisis response systems in Ohio and, eventually, across the country.

Let’s work together to create a clear pathway for everyone.

The Issue: Each year, more than 2 million people with severe mental illness are booked into jail. On top of that, people in mental health or substance use disorder crisis represent 20,000 to 25,000 emergency room visits each day.

Hospitals and jails in Ohio and across the U.S. are shouldering the burden of these crises, and people in crisis are struggling to break out of cycles of incarceration and hospitalization.
