Balancing Act: Challenges Creating a Roadmap for Rural Crisis Services

Twelve years ago, Sante Eastern Shore Crisis Response Services started with 2 mobile crisis teams which served 8 rural counties. Through the years, the system has grown to include a regional call center, 4 traditional mobile crisis teams, specialized mobile crisis teams for families of children and adolescents, a school-based service, safe station, and Crisis Intervention Teams (CIT). The organization’s growing pains underscored the importance of looking at infrastructure to build capacity, to review staffing models to determine if they meet the needs of your community, and the importance of community partners and collaborations.

Behavioral health crisis systems must be ready to spin on a dime in today’s world. Organizations must create leadership opportunities for staff and look to creative solutions for the workforce shortage. Join the Clear Pathways Lunch & Learn to hear from Eastern Shore’s leadership about the challenges and successes along the way.

Session Objectives:

  • Understand the unique challenges and opportunities associated with launching and maintaining behavioral health emergency response services in rural areas
  • Gain insight into a needs assessment process to determine best fit for specific behavioral health emergency response modalities
  • Explore creative strategies for addressing workforce challenges
